Director James Gunn has begun filming the long-awaited Superman movie in Norway, and has revealed the reasons behind choosing this Scandinavian country as the setting for filming.
In an interview with the Norwegian media SvalbardPosten, James Gunn shared details about the first scene that was filmed:
“We have shot the first scenes, which show Superman fleeing to the Fortress of Solitude. We wanted a place that was beautiful and felt like we were in the middle of the Arctic, so we looked at various locations around the world. But there were many things that sold Svalbard to us over the other places.”
And he continued: “First of all, there is natural beauty. But there is also the fact that here you will find a varied landscape that you will not find anywhere else. “Nature gives a special feeling.”

Release date and other locations
This film is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025. James Gunn did not reveal the exact number of scenes that will be filmed in Svalbard, but he mentioned that some of the production will also take place in Ohio at some point.
This indicates that the film will have an international scope and will explore different settings for Superman’s story.
Importantly, James has made it clear in previous statements that this Superman movie will not be a conventional origin story.
Instead, it will focus on the iconic superhero’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing in Smallville, Kansas, as Clark Kent. The film will explore themes of identity and the challenge of balancing the alien and human aspects of Superman.
Stellar cast
In addition to David Corenswet as Superman, the film’s cast includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer.
Completing the cast are Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Sean Gunn, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Isabel Merced and Nathan Fillion.
