Liverpool storms towards the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
The red-clad Merseyside gang crushed Sparta Prague 5-1 away on Thursday and thus already have one foot in the next round before the return at Anfield next week. The only cloud of worry? Joe Gomez was replaced at half-time, and Ibrahima Konaté broke the tie early in the second half.
Two out of four in the starting back line, that is. And already on Sunday, a series final awaits against runner-up Manchester City in the Premier League.
Shortly after the final whistle, head coach Jürgen Klopp gives some reassuring information about the duo. He believes, for example, that everything is calm with Gomez, while the Konaté exchange was a precautionary measure.
– We don’t know how it is with him yet. “Ibou” told me: “If I do one more sprint, then it can be over”. He should be okay but we don’t know yet. We have to wait and see with him (before Sunday), says Klopp according to the Liverpool Echo.
– Gomez is okay. He has played a lot, so we took him off and the trade was more for rotational reasons.
Konaté has made 31 appearances for “The Reds” this year, the majority of them as a starter.
Liverpool top the Premier League ahead of Sunday’s summit. Pep Guardiola and his light blue men are a point behind.
