Church

The Great Stew is always celebrated on the Saturday meeting day, Shrove Sunday.

Commemoration of the dead souls is mandatory. Every year All Souls’ Day is celebrated on a Saturday, because in the weekly holiday cycle the church has designated that day of the week as the day for the dead.

The memorial can be done at home, at the grave of the dead or in the church. During the day, common sofras are laid. It is important that the first bite and the first sip of wine be placed on the ground, as they are for the dead.

Whenever this is done, the words “May God forgive” are said.

It is believed that if a butterfly or other fly appears around the table, it means that the dead souls visit us. In many places, an empty place was always left on the tables so that there would be a place for the deceased to sit.

It is also customary to distribute salt and flour, which actually symbolize the sins of the dead.

It is wrong to leave sorrel on graves because hungry animals eat it and thus defile the souls of the dead.

At the Great Stew, it is good to have wine, wheat and pita on the table of the people. Lamb, candies, sweets, fruit, sweets and other foods that the dead loved to eat while alive may also be added.
