Julian Nagelsmann’s European Championship Squad: Surprises, Concerns, and Potential Candidates Revealed

There are still 99 days until the home European Championships in the summer. We are moving quickly towards the start of the tournament and for Julian Nagelsmann into the hot phase of the European Championship nomination. The national coach has a few surprise candidates on the list – but some other players have to worry about their European Championship ticket.

The European Championship year begins for the German national team with international matches against France (March 23) and the Netherlands (March 26). The foundations for a successful home European Championship should be laid against the two top nations. Julian Nagelsmann (36), who only took over from Hansi Flick in September, doesn’t have much time left to find a starting eleven.

Ter Stegen only number two again?

Nevertheless, the national coach has already decided on some positions, writes Sport Bild. He is said to have already informed Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who replaced Manuel Neuer during his long injury break, that Neuer would be returning to the box for the upcoming international matches. This puts Ter Stegen back in the role of challenger.

The places of Antonio Rüdiger (31) and Jonathan Tah (28) in the defensive center and Joshua Kimmich (29) in the right-back position should also be secure. It is currently unclear who will be on the left defensive side. Robin Gosens (29) and David Raum (25) are in the race – the Union defender should have a small advantage.

According to the tabloid, Mats Hummels, Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck, who are all said to have a difficult time under Nagelsmann, have to worry about their European Championship ticket. Returnee Toni Kroos has his place secure in midfield, as does captain Ilkay Gündogan, who will probably play a position further forward. Robert Andrich, Pascal Groß and Leon Goretzka are probably fighting for third place in the center.

Undav gets to prove himself

In the center of the attack, BVB striker Niclas Füllkrug has the edge over Kai Havertz, who is currently going through a strong phase at Arsenal. According to the report, Deniz Undav will get his chance at the next international matches and can therefore recommend himself for the tournament.

Another trio from VfB Stuttgart can also hope for a nomination. We’re talking about Maximilian Mittelstädt, who could solve the left-back problem, as well as Waldemar Anton and Chris Führich, who was recently part of the DFB entourage. Maximilian Beier from TSG Hoffenheim is also considered a potential candidate for the European Championship squad.
