REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — General Chairman of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir welcomed the implementation of the video assistant referee (VAR) which had just been used in the U-20 Elite Pro Academy (EPA) final between Persis Solo U- 20 against Persita Tangerang U-20 at Manahan Stadium, Solo, Central Java, Thursday (7/3/2024).

On VAR trial In the match which Persis won with a score of 3-1, Erick wanted this VAR tryout to provide a lot of experience for all elements involved in the competition.

“As we know, VAR is one of the standards for good professional football competitions. If now it can be tested in competitions, even for young people, this indicates that we have started to move towards improving the standards of better competitions. I hope it starts with the players “, officials, especially match officials, namely referees, can learn a lot from this great opportunity so that our football becomes more professional and clean,” said Erick, quoted from the official PSSI website, Friday (8/3/2024).

At this moment, there are 8+2 cameras used in implementation of VAR in the Persis match against Persita. This VAR trial is the first batch and is planned to last until April in a total of 13-16 matches.

“Based on input from FIFA via the VAR instructor, then PSSI “assigned the highest ranking VAR referee after receiving training for the last 6 months,” said Erick.

“Because of that, I ask the referees who are on duty and have the opportunity to test VAR to apply training knowledge as best as possible. Moreover, during this trial, FIFA will carry out an assessment for VAR batch 1,” he added.

On this occasion, representatives of Hawk-Eye and FIFA were also present. Hawk-Eye’s Lewis Watterson admitted that preparations for implementing VAR at Manahan Stadium had gone well.

“Everything is going well. There still needs to be improvement, but so far it’s going well,” said Lewis Watterson.
