A major fire raged at lighting wholesaler HVP Lighting in Deerlijk in West Flanders on Friday afternoon. The plume of smoke could be seen from afar and blew towards the city of Harelbeke. The emergency services arrived en masse. Police have set up a perimeter.
The fire brigade of the Fluvia emergency zone tried to save two adjacent houses, one of which is the home of the parents of singer and presenter Niels Destadsbader (35). According to Fluvia spokesperson Kaat Nuyttens, the family’s house is said to have been saved.
According to mayor Claude Croes, the singer himself lives in an apartment above the company that is on fire. According to the mayor, his loft burned down.
Fight the fire for a few more hours
No one was reportedly injured and the fire brigade focused on extinguishing the fire on Friday afternoon. That could take several hours. Due to the enormous smoke development, the fire brigade asked to close windows and doors and turn off ventilation.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, but roofing work was underway at the time the fire broke out.
