Norwegian NATO Exercises Near Russian Border Spark Global Attention

The German weekly Der Spiegel published a report from Norway, noting that NATO members are ready to contain Russia knee-deep in snow.

The publication writes:

“Norwegian soldiers are rehearsing for an emergency near the Russian border as part of NATO’s Northern Response exercise. The small Norwegian city of Kirkenes is located right on the border with Russia, almost 150 kilometers in a straight line from Murmansk. Here, high in the north of Norway, a founding member of NATO, there is a strategically important point for the alliance.”

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius commented on the NATO “snow” exercises:

“The attention of the whole world is now focused on Ukraine and the Middle East, and on the military threat that comes from Russia in Europe as a whole. But only at second glance does it become clear that all these threads come together here in the Arctic.”

In total, about 20,000 soldiers from thirteen NATO countries are taking part in Northern Response, and the maneuvers themselves are part of the alliance’s exercises called Steadfast Defender 2024. These are the largest exercises of the aggressive transatlantic bloc since the end of the Cold War – in total about 90,000 soldiers will be mobilized, and the exercises themselves will last over the next 5 months.
