US does not detect “malicious” activity in global crash of Instagram and Facebook – 2024-03-08 05:34:13

Millions of platform users Meta, Facebook e Instagramreported this Tuesday access problems due to a global outage, which the company later described as a “technical problem.”

“Something went wrong,” “you can’t access,” were some of the notifications that put users in check, who initially thought it was a connection failure or a hacking of their accounts.

At 11:52 in the morning, Andy Stone, head of communications at Meta, reported that “we are aware that people are having problems accessing our services. “We are working on this now.” With this statement, he clarified that it was a failure.

At 1:19 in the afternoon, he stated that “earlier today, a technical problem caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services. “We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone affected and apologize for any inconvenience.”

CNN reported that according to the interruption tracker Downdetector, in the United States they received failure reports from 500,000 Facebook users, 50,000 on Instagram and another 10,000 out of 500,000 Facebook users. However, it is estimated that the number of affected users is higher, since not all have their reports in this meter.

It is striking that the problem also affected Elon Musk’s Threads social network.

Cause of the fall of Facebook and Instagram

Meta did not specify what the “problem” consisted of, but a spokesperson for the United States Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency told CNN that they did not detect “malicious” activity in the failure, this in reference to the fact that this March 5 is the Super Tuesday primary elections.

“We are aware of the availability problems that affect certain services provided by Meta. At this time we are not aware of any specific malicious cyber activity or any specific link to today’s elections,” the spokesperson notified the aforementioned media.

Global failures of Meta platforms occur regularly and most of the time they are due to technical issues.
