JawaPos.com – For the first time Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is officially used in Indonesian football competitions.
The use of VAR, to be precise, took place in the final of the U-20 Elite Pro Academy (EPA) competition at Manahan Stadium, Solo, during the Persis Solo match against Persita Tangerang on Thursday (7/3).
The final match of the age competition was led directly by referee Thoriq M Alkatiri. Thoriq admitted that he was nervous and tried to adapt because there were several technical factors that were slightly different from matches without using VAR.
“The first time there was tension, it’s natural because this is the first time we’ve used VAR in an official competition. But thank god After 10-15 minutes we got used to it because basically it wasn’t much different. “There are just a few technicalities that need to be adapted,” he said as reported by Radar Solo (JawaPos Group).
It turns out that the tension was not only felt by Thoriq, he revealed that the tension was also felt by the other referee team who were tasked with being operators in the VAR room.

“Can calm down earlier because someone was afraid of making a mistake. “Including those in the VAR room, even though it was very cold in the room, they were sweating, because it was the first time using VAR in an official competition,” he said.
In the EPA final match that Thursday (7/3) afternoon, VAR was used in the 81st minute when Persita Tangerang was almost awarded a penalty kick by referee Thoriq.
This incident occurred after Reza Alfariz was deemed to have violated Kaka Reda in the penalty box. But in the end, the penalty decision was annulled by the referee.
“I saw Persita players fall before they weretackle. Yes, there was a tackle but the player fell before the tackle occurred. So, I cancel the penalty,” said Thoriq.
Thoriq feels that VAR technology in the future will be a breath of fresh air for the world of football in Indonesia. With clear evidence in the match, namely that events in the match were caught on camera and live television.
“So you can definitely accept and understand when there is a decision which is then checked by VAR and can change. “But it could still be, it depends on the judgment of the referee who is leading the match,” he said.
