Congress Failure to Approve U.S. Military Aid to Ukraine Criticized as ‘Gift’ to Putin and Adversaries

Congress’ failure to approve new U.S. military aid to Ukraine is “nothing more than a gift” to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iran and other U.S. adversaries while Ukrainian forces run out of ammunition to fight the Russian invasion, the U.S. has said. Finance Minister Janet Yellen, quoted by Reuters, reported BTA.

In a statement at the start of a meeting with German Economy Minister Robert Habeck in Washington, Yellen again urged House Speaker Mike Johnson to quickly put to a vote and pass the $61 billion military and economic aid package for Ukraine. Members of Congress will gather at the Capitol tonight for President Joe Biden’s annual State of the Union address.

“While the House continues to delay, Russia is advancing in its territorial gains and Ukraine is being forced to conserve ammunition and supplies,” Yellen said. “The House must act and show the strength of American support for Ukraine in the face of Putin’s aggression. The inaction of Congress is nothing more than a gift to Putin, Iran and other adversaries who are against America and its allies,” she added.

Iran supplies missiles, drones and other weapons systems to Russia.

Yellen also said that budget support for Ukraine would be conditional on more reforms in addition to already “robust” transparency and oversight in the country.
