Recognizing the Age of the Earth from Rocks and Fossils
By: Dwi Sulistyaningrum, S. Pd.
How much do we know about the earth, one year, two years or even thirty years. The earth was formed long before humans were created. To find out about this, we can look at various aspects, one of which is the rocks and fossils on the surface of the earth. There are many phenomena that occurred from the formation of the earth until it became what it is today. In relation to the formation of rocks from the rock cycle, or even rocks that were formed hundreds of years ago as a result of plate movement. If in the rock cycle, rock initially comes from magma which then cools and solidifies into igneous rock which will later experience weathering by exogenous forces such as water, climate, weather, which will become sedimentary rock and be deposited in the sea which will later be exposed to pressure and temperature will make metamorphic rock.
There are lots of rocks on the surface of the earth that we can use either as building materials or for jewelry. For example, slate, quartz, breccia, granite and many others. However, in relation to the process of rock formation, it is a very long process which began with the cooling process of the earth’s surface millions of years ago, which after freezing became the earth’s crust which can now be known as continental plates and oceanic plates which can later be moved by endogenous forces that Later, the plates will move so that they become what they are today. A simple example is limestone, limestone is formed not on land but on the seabed but now
We can see limestone that is already on land, or igneous rock that is formed in the earth and metamorphic rock is also formed in the earth. The main factor in this phenomenon is plate movement, namely divergent, convergent and transformative.
You can see in the photo that the round ones are numilites and shells. Numilites are foraminifera fossils that are characterized by many coils so they look like coins. Nummilites can be found in the Bayat-Klaten, Karangsambung-Kebumen areas, and fragments in the ancient mud of Sangiran-Sragen. Judging from these fossils, it can reveal the formation of the island of Java. The island of Java, which previously only had land and shallow seas without any active volcanoes, can be proven from this numilites limestone. So these numilites were the first life that existed on the island of Java, which is estimated to be 60 million years ago.
Well, the island of Java was formed as we know it today, starting from the plate collision between the Indo-Australian plate which collided with the Eurasian plate, therefore this nunmilites limestone was able to be lifted, which was previously life in shallow seas.
