Spaniard Rafael Nadal, the holder of 22 major tournament titles, withdrew from the Indian Wells Masters Tennis Tournament due to his lack of readiness to compete, casting further doubts about the possibility of his return to the highest levels of the game.
The 37-year-old’s decision came four days after he lost an exhibition match in Las Vegas to fellow rising star Carlos Alcaraz, ranked second in the world.
Nadal missed most of the tournaments of the 2023 season due to injuries in his abdomen and various parts of his body, and he only participated this year in the Australian tournament in Brisbane, where he suffered an injury to his hip.
Nadal was expected to play against Canadian veteran Milos Raonic.
“It is with great sadness that I withdraw from the wonderful Indian Wells tournament,” El Matador said. “I was working hard, but I do not see myself ready to play at the highest level in a similar major event.”
The left-handed player added, “It was not an easy decision, but I cannot lie to myself and lie to thousands of fans.”
