The hugely popular game ‘Fortnite’ has not been playable on iPhones and iPads for more than three years. Apple pulled the game from its app store – the App Store – in August 2020 because Epic had tried to circumvent its lucrative payment system. Epic went to court, but was blunt.
New EU legislation – which has come into effect today – intended to boost competition, now obliges Apple to also allow app stores from other companies on its devices in the EU. Epic wanted to launch such a store to be able to release ‘Fortnite’ again on Apple devices.
However, Apple has closed Epic’s developer account, the game developer reports. As a result, the game developer cannot launch its own app store. According to Epic, this is a retaliatory action by Apple after sharp criticism from Epic CEO Tim Sweeny about the way in which Apple applies the new EU rules.
