Latvian Minister Puntulis Opens Up About Loneliness and Losing Friends

Puntulis shared about moments of loneliness: “Of course, I have a family and quite a big family, but when we talk about lonely in that sense, I mean more like a circle of friends. During these years as a minister, that has been lost. There have never been many friends, because as a native of Kurzeme, I have never been particularly friendly myself.

I never had many friends, but since these years I have also lost the same ones. Basically, the reason is that any friendship needs to be nurtured and maintained and there was no time for that. Someone has already been lost because they may have expected something favorable from my position, as in the Soviet times, and they didn’t expect it.”

As another reason why friends have disappeared, the tenor cites potential envy that someone may not have gotten over. “Putting it all together, at some point I realize that after these years I have become much, much lonelier than before,” says Puntulis.
