The second division game between Southampton and Preston North End in England was canceled at short notice due to a major fire in a nearby building. “The incident caused significant disruption in the area,” said the football club from southern England.

Southampton (dpa). The streets around the stadium are closed and the fire brigade is still on duty. It is not yet known whether people were injured in the fire.

We understand the disappointment of the fans. The first priority must be the safety of spectators and employees of both clubs, it said. A catch-up date will be announced at a later date.

Southampton, fourth in the table, still has a chance of direct promotion to the Premier League, while Preston, in ninth place, hopes to take part in the promotion relegation.
