Deputy Minister of Health: Family is root of childhood obesity problem

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Deputy Minister of Health Dante Saksono Harbuwono said that the root of the problem of obesity in children is the family, because if the parents are fat, the children are also fat, because children follow their parents’ lifestyle.

He reminded that even though it makes children seem cute and adorable, obesity carries the risk of metabolic syndrome which is related to coronary heart disease, stroke and blood vessels.

“So, if we let the children remain fat, then we save the children’s savings from developing heart and blood vessel disease in the future,” said Dante in a statement received in Jakarta, Wednesday.

According to him, this can be overcome by adopting a healthy lifestyle.

The Ministry of Health, he said, issued the Contents of My Plate as a nutritional guide, which suggests that protein consumption should be increased compared to carbohydrates in one plate at a time. According to him, children need lots of protein for their growth and development, and not more carbohydrates.

“Carbohydrates are still important for energy, but we limit them, we use them to prevent children from getting fat,” Dante added.

He explained, according to Basic Health Research, one in three people in Indonesia is obese. Apart from that, he said, one in five children in Indonesia is overweight.

The percentage of obesity has continued to increase in the last decade, he said, from eight percent in 2007 to 21.8 percent in 2018. Dante said that this is almost the case in all developing countries, due to changes in income for the better.

“Their income started to rise, their food started to change and so on, so the obesity rate in the area became higher,” he said.

On the same occasion, the Director of Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Eva Susanti, said that one of the challenges in implementing obesity prevention and control is access to technology and facilities that focus on customers, such as online food ordering services and online motorcycle taxis, thereby making people lack of physical activity.

“The occurrence of a lazy lifestyle or sedentary lifestyle, as well as an increase in the obesogenic environment, namely food that is high in sugar and fat and without paying attention to calorie value,” said Eva.

Eva revealed that the success of obesity prevention and control in Indonesia cannot be separated from the support of all parties, both across sectors and across programs, the private sector and society. He said, it is hoped that the public will increase their knowledge, awareness and concern for obesity by carrying out regular early detection at posbindu and health facilities.

“Obesity is very likely to be prevented by adopting healthy lifestyle habits. “Prevention of risk factors requires the commitment of each individual to be responsible for their own health,” he said.

World Obesity Day is celebrated every March 4. This year, the commemoration carries the global theme “Let’s talk about obesity” and the national theme “Let’s fight obesity”.
