Tragic Death in Massive Michigan Building Fire

In a devastating incident, a massive fire broke out at Select Distributors in Clinton Township, Michigan, resulting in the tragic death of a 19-year-old bystander. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, leaving authorities puzzled as they try to piece together the events that led to this heartbreaking incident.

According to Clinton Township Fire Chief Tim Duncan, the young man was on foot near a service station on 15 Mile Road when he was struck in the head by a projectile that shot out of the fire amid continuous explosions. Chief Duncan stated that the teen was “at least a quarter mile away from the actual building,” emphasizing just how powerful the force of the explosion was.

The identity of the victim has not been disclosed, but his untimely death has left the community in mourning. Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel expressed his condolences, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers and sadness to the family, friends, and loved ones in the community of the loss of a life of a 19-year-old out in the street that got hit by one of those pieces of shrapnel.”

The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on Tuesday morning, leaving investigators with the daunting task of uncovering the cause of the fire. The fire department and other authorities were present at the scene, carefully examining every detail to shed light on this tragic event.

Not only did this fire claim a young life, but it also resulted in minor injuries to a firefighter. A piece of debris pierced through the windshield and grazed the side of the firefighter’s face. Fortunately, the injured firefighter was treated and released from the hospital, but it serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by those who work to protect others.

The aftermath of the fire revealed a scene of destruction with debris scattered across a wide area. As authorities surveyed the site, they discovered an open knife among the wreckage. Chief Duncan revealed that the retail location housed items with blades and knives, which were also propelled through the air due to the force of the explosions. As a precautionary measure, authorities are meticulously searching the area to collect any potentially dangerous objects.

Select Distributors, the site of the fire, is known for selling combustible materials as well as novelty items and general merchandise. The fire broke out at approximately 9 p.m. on Monday, prompting multiple calls to emergency services. The building was quickly evacuated, and four individuals managed to escape unharmed.

The intensity of the fire was evident by the loud explosions that resonated throughout the area for over an hour. Residents were urged by the Clinton Township Police Department via Facebook to steer clear of the vicinity due to the projectiles being projected into the air, posing a significant risk to anyone nearby.

As this tragic event unfolded, it served as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by firefighters and the unpredictable nature of fires. Chief Duncan expressed his sadness, saying, “It’s very sad to see something like that. It’s something we all recognize as part of the danger of what we do. But boy, having a civilian just walking the streets and getting hit by something like that, totally unexpected … I couldn’t think of anything sadder as an outcome for this particular situation.”

The investigation into this devastating fire is ongoing, and authorities are determined to find answers for both the victim’s family and the community at large.
