Three Confirmed Cases of Measles in Metro Detroit, Michigan
In a concerning turn of events, three cases of measles have been confirmed in metro Detroit, Michigan. The first case was reported in Oakland County on February 23, followed by additional cases in Washtenaw County and Wayne County over the weekend. While health officials believe these cases are linked to international travel, there are several local sites where people may have been exposed to the virus.
The news has understandably caused distress among parents in the area. Evita Singh, a concerned parent, expressed her worry, stating, “It’s happened a few times before and it’s always a little bit distressing.” However, many parents like Hope McGrath and Rachna Gulati remain vigilant, ensuring their children are fully vaccinated against measles. They trust in the effectiveness of the MMR vaccine, which is known to be 97% effective against the virus.
Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, the chief medical executive with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, is urging unvaccinated individuals to get vaccinated. She emphasizes that the MMR vaccine has been in use since the 1960s and has proven to be incredibly safe and effective. In fact, the United States has considered measles eliminated for over 20 years. However, vaccination rates among children aged 4 to 6 have dropped by nearly 5% in recent years, posing a greater risk of a measles outbreak.
Bagdasarian warns, “Given our lower vaccination rates in Michigan and across the country, we are putting ourselves at greater risk of a measles outbreak. It’s a matter of when, not if.” To ensure lifelong immunity, it is recommended that children receive one dose of the MMR vaccine at 12 months and another dose at 4 years old. Vaccines are readily available at doctors’ offices, health departments, and pharmacies.
Yacoub Apoian, a pharmacist at Mills Pharmacy in Birmingham, acknowledges that while it is not common, he has administered the MMR vaccine. He encourages parents to obtain the vaccine from a pediatrician, but assures that pharmacies can order it if necessary. If the number of cases continues to rise, Apoian is prepared to order more doses to keep up with the demand.
For now, health departments are working diligently to isolate these cases and prevent a large outbreak. Dr. Bagdasarian emphasizes the importance of vaccination, stating, “These are three isolated cases. We have not seen a large outbreak yet, and we can avoid a large outbreak if folks get vaccinated.” The potential severity of measles is not to be taken lightly, as it can be deadly, particularly among children.
