They used to exist in an inseparable double pack and as a multi-award-winning successful duo: the “Coen Brothers”. You don’t know what goes on in families, but now each of them cooks their own soup. Joel Coen has delivered a “Macbeth” film adaptation, and Ethan Coen is now starring in the strange comedy “Drive-Away Dolls” in a team with his wife Tricia Cooke, who was heavily involved in the idea, development and script of this story Solo director. This is not a film for conventional minds who want a story told straight – it’s a crude, confused, but also very funny mix of genres.

First and foremost, it’s a lesbian film. The lesbianism of the two young heroines is not the problem for a second. It’s them, they live it, Jamie, one, completely uninhibited and happy, Marian, the other, initially rather inhibited, until she too gives in to the fun of female sex. There is a lot of it, certainly presented in a voyeuristic way, but always as a source of fun and never as a problem.

Secondly, as he has often done in his brother’s films, Coen unleashes a handful of stupid, if hideously brutal, mini-gangsters. When the two girls mistakenly get the wrong car from the suspicious car rental company that contains contraband for their trip to Tallahassee, Florida, the art villains (you can’t be that stupid in real life) are on their trail. Absolutely every nonsense included…

Thirdly, it is a classic American road movie, except that here you usually stop off in lesbian bars and other relevant locations. The script won’t win any prizes with its mediocre ideas, but the style is “Coen”, namely uninhibited, not for every taste (and certainly not for good ones), but anyone who has a taste for it will be entertained.

The two actresses in particular prove to be worth seeing, they are pretty in very different ways, have very different characters and are simply perfect in the mix. Margaret Qualley is the daughter of actress Andie MacDowell, far more lively than her mother, who usually only gave you a crooked, sour smile on her beautiful face. You can believe this Jamie’s total lack of inhibition in her lifestyle, which characterizes her. On the other hand, the Australian actress Geraldine Viswanathan Adorable in her initial tenseness, but when you sit in the car together for a long time and then stagger from one catastrophe to the next together, then you start to thaw out, and she does it delightfully. In any case, the two are worth a film. Yes, and there are also a few strange gangster characters, and if so Matt Damon appears in a kind of cameo as a politician, you can hardly recognize him.

Incidentally, it is noticeable that the whole thing takes place before the turn of the millennium, when smartphones were not yet in the palm of people’s hands and people had no idea what social media would do to people. In short, you can tell a story that is not at all normal in a completely “normal” way.

Yes, and as I said, it’s a film for lesbians – and for men who like to watch the ladies in their sexual activities. Ethan Coen really didn’t show any restraint.
