Over the many years of owning different generations of iPhones, I long ago learned to charge my device only with a branded Apple charger. In my backpack there is always a white block for a modest 18 W and the original cable from the iPhone 15 Pro box. If my smartphone runs out of charge, I only use this setup.
And just the other day I discovered that I left the cable and charging unit in the office. I didn’t want to use the Chinese analogues randomly scattered around the apartment, so I connected my iPhone 15 Pro to the original 45 W charger from the Steam Deck.
After half an hour I decided to check how the smartphone was doing and…
I didn’t expect to ever encounter something like this.
My iPhone literally turned off
Taking the device in my hands, I saw on the screen the warning that I had seen before just one time many years agowhen I accidentally left my iPhone in the car under the scorching sun in the middle of summer.
Everything was clear then: the temperature in the cabin was transcendental and the iPhone showed a warning that for further operation it would need to be cooled to an adequate temperature. Needless to say, the body was simply red-hot.
And the same thing awaited me in the case of the iPhone 15 Pro, which was charged from the included Steam Deck charger. The case was very hot, the device did not respond to button presses, and the screen showed a notification about the need to cool the smartphone.
Of course, the iPhone was immediately disconnected from charging and placed on a cool windowsill. After 15 minutes the warning disappeared and the device turned on.
It would seem that everything ended well, but that was not the case.
The maximum battery capacity has decreased
Last week I checked the battery parameters in the settings and the maximum capacity value was 100%. Now, after the incident with charging from the Steam Deck, this parameter has changed by 90%.
Moreover, a couple of days have passed and nothing has changed. Apparently, overheating hit hard on the built-in battery. Needless to say, my iPhone began to discharge noticeably faster during daylight hours.
Perhaps very soon I will have to take my device to a service center and spend money on replacing the battery. This could have been avoided if I hadn’t forgotten the original charger and cable, so don’t repeat my mistake and try to charge your iPhone only with original chargers.
Yes, after this incident, all Chinese power supplies went into the trash by default. From now on I only have two chargers and both are original from Apple. I refuse to admit others, it might be too expensive.
