In Zoutkamp, the area around Marneweg/N361 and Strandweg was cordoned off on Monday afternoon because two suspicious packages were found. After investigation, it became clear at the beginning of the evening that there were no explosives.
Initially, the police received a report of one suspicious package at the beginning of the afternoon, but after investigation it turned out that there were two packages, according to the police. Part of a barracks within the cordoned off area was evacuated.
The first package was found in the public space along the provincial road at the intersection with the Strandweg. The second package was also located along that road, but a police spokeswoman did not say where exactly.
Waiting for findings from EOD
The Defense Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (EOD) investigated the site for hours, but at the beginning of the evening it turned out that there were no explosive substances. The EOD takes the packages with them to investigate further and the previously cordoned off area has been released again.
Defense has several locations, including a training area along the Marneweg. The Willem Lodewijk van Nassaukazerne is located on the side street Strandweg, near where the packages were found. Part of the barracks fell within the cordoned off area and was therefore evacuated.
