On Tuesday, March 5th, at 3:30 p.m. in Terminal 5 of the Fumicino International Airport, the San Egidio Community, Archi (Associazione Ricreativa Culturale Italiana) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will hold a press conference.
97 refugees who were kept in detention camps in Libya as victims of torture and other serious tortures have been freed from there and brought to Italy. Among them are some persons who are very weak in health. Refugees coming from different African countries (Eritrea, Ethiopia, Central African Republic, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan), Palestine and Syria are hosted in different Italian regions and enabled to work for minors, schooling, adults and Italian language studies, following the model of humanitarian corridors. Help is also being provided through social integration.
Their arrival in Italy was made possible by a protocol signed last December by the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, UNHCR – UN Refugee Agency, Archi, San Egidio Community, Federation of Evangelical Churches and INMP. It would allow 1,500 refugees in need of international protection to be transferred from Libya to Italy over three years.
A representative of the Holy See will also attend the reception of the refugees and the press conference.
