The Spiritual Significance and Beauty of the Pleiades Star Cluster in Islam

SPACE – The Pleiades star cluster has attracted the attention of skywatchers for centuries. In Arabic, the Pleiades star cluster is known as Tsurayya.

In Islamic teachings, Tsurayya or Pleiades has an important meaning associated with the end of disaster or disease. Rasulullah Muhammad Shallalahu Alaihi Wassalam (SAW) has stated in his hadith narrated by at-Thabrani, “If the Star (Najm or Tsurayya) rises, then the disease or virus will be lifted from the people of the whole country.”

This hadith confirms the belief that an increase or rise in Tsurayya’s position in the sky is a positive sign for society, indicating the end of a plague or disease that has struck an area. This is one of the spiritual aspects of Islam which emphasizes the importance of faith and hope in facing difficult times.

Located about 410 light years from Earth, this cluster is one of the most interesting and easiest to see cosmic phenomena in the night sky.

The stars in the Pleiades emit a dazzling blue light, adding to the beauty of the night sky with their brilliance. In this cluster, there are seven brightest stars that stand out among 800 other stars. Not surprisingly, this star cluster is often called the Seven Sisters.

The brightest stars include Alcyone, Atlas, Electra, Merope, Taygete, Pleione, and Maia. Alcyone being the most striking among them.

Although bright, the Pleiades stars are on average smaller than the Sun in our solar system. However, their beauty and diversity within the cluster is no less amazing.
The following are facts about the Pleiades:

1. The Pleiades have attracted the attention of astronomers since ancient times. Galileo Galilei, one of the leading figures in the history of astronomy, was the first person to observe it through a telescope in March 1610. Galileo said the Pleiades contained 36 stars in his observation notes, bringing this cluster into the spotlight of the scientific world.

2. With its stunning beauty, the Pleiades or Tsurayya is one of the most interesting and captivating celestial objects to be observed by researchers and stargazers throughout the world.

3. The Pleiades is an open star cluster, consisting of more than 1,000 stars. The Pleiades are located in the constellation Taurus and are approximately 410 light years from Earth.

4. Pleiades is also known as the “Seven Sisters” or Sever Sister and is also called Messier 45.

5. As an open cluster, the stars in the Pleiades were all born at the same time from a giant cloud of gas and dust. The bright stars in the formation glow hot blue and were formed in the last 100 million years.

6. The stars in the Pleiades are very bright and will die quickly. Their lifespan is only a few hundred million years, far shorter than the billions of years our sun will enjoy.

7. The Pleiades can be seen almost anywhere in the world, except in the Antarctic Circle. In both hemispheres, the Pleiades are visible from October to April and visible throughout the night in November.
