Hello all,
My name is Amber and I am 20 years old. In 2022 I got mononucleosis, when I was just 19. The doctor told me that I could continue to do everything, so I did. I worked in the catering industry but I reduced my working days because I was very tired. After about four months I got corona for the third time and because I didn’t have any problems the previous times, I wasn’t worried at first.
When I got Corona (March 2023), I did an internship 32 hours a week and this was previously very difficult with glandular fever, but now there were a lot of complaints. The next few days of my internship were very difficult and I soon noticed that I was becoming dizzy, seeing blackness in front of my eyes and having palpitations. I called in sick and I didn’t know that this was the beginning of a very long and difficult period in my life.
Complaints I received: extreme fatigue, palpitations, hypersensitivity to sound and light, blackness in my eyes, shortness of breath, joint pain, forgetfulness, concentration problems, brain fog, muscle tension, headache, sadness and burning tingling in legs and feet
In the beginning I slept about 20 hours a day and was only awake to eat. Even chewing food was too much for me. After my doctor told me that she couldn’t do anything for me and referred me to a physiotherapist, I knew that it wouldn’t work for me. I could barely walk, how would I do physical therapy? When I exercise my complaints actually worsen.
I had to stop training, internship, catering work and sports, no more energy for any of those things.
After this I continued my search and came across orthomolecular therapy and respiratory therapy, which I am still working on to this day. I eat healthy, get my vitamins and have about 4 rest moments a day. These therapies have helped me achieve minimal improvement. In recent months I have been to the hospital a lot for tests, but there have been no abnormal results. That’s why I’m still looking further.
Before I got sick, my life was very much in order. I studied HBO Social Work in Alkmaar and did an internship in Amsterdam South. I worked in the catering industry, exercised 4 to 5 days a week and did fun things with my boyfriend and friends. At the moment I can only walk a maximum of 500 meters and I sometimes have to recover for days. The mental aspect is now also starting to play a role (read against). In total, I have been ill for almost 1.5 years now and I long to get 100% better again.
Last week I went for a 20-minute walk because the weather was lovely and I wanted to go outside. Then I lay in bed for two days, too tired to talk, eat or move. I was in such bad shape at this point, physically and mentally, that my parents continued to look for a way to find a healing method and they came across Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.
Hospitals are experimenting with this and they say there is a 60% chance of getting better for people with Long Covid. I want to tackle this therapy with both hands. Unfortunately, this therapy is not yet reimbursed by the insurance companies (for Long Covid patients) and I therefore have to pay for it myself. That’s why I’m setting up this crowdfunding in the hope that people will support me and contribute to my recovery process.
One treatment costs €211 per 90-minute session and 40 to 50 treatments are prescribed for people with Long Covid. We arrive at an estimate of € 8,500.
I am going to follow the therapy in Rijswijk, this is the nearest clinic and it is an hour’s drive away. Unfortunately, this will incur additional transport costs of an estimated € 1,000
For me, this therapy is a good chance to heal and get my life back! Do you want to help me?
With kind regards,
Amber Blaauw
