Former US representative to the UN Nikki Haley scored her first victory over Donald Trump in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, the Associated Press and DPA reported.
Haley won the Washington, D.C., race with 62.86 percent of the vote to Trump’s 33.22 percent, the D.C. Republican Party said late tonight. A total of 2,035 Republicans participated in the election.
Haley, who is considered a more moderate than Trump, still has a slim chance of ultimately prevailing against the former president in securing the Republican nomination. But Trump has won every primary so far, including Haley’s home state of South Carolina, and it is almost certain that he will face President Joe Biden in the November presidential election.
Before the primary in Washington, D.C., Trump had already collected 244 delegates to Haley’s 24. Her victory in the nation’s capital would add just 19 to her tally.
However, Haley has signaled she will stay in the race at least until Super Tuesday tonight, when 15 states and one territory vote.
