SAKHIR (ANP/RTR) – Formula 1 racing stable Red Bull has denied to the British channel BBC that there is unrest within the team after strong criticism from Jos Verstappen about the situation surrounding team boss Christian Horner, who was acquitted of inappropriate behavior. According to the father of three-time world champion Max Verstappen, “things cannot continue as they are now and it will lead to an explosion,” he told De Telegraaf, among others.
Verstappen senior had told the English newspaper Daily Mail that tension within the team will continue as long as Horner remains in office. “The team is then in danger of falling apart.” Verstappen is also said to have said that “Horner plays the victim, while he is the one causing the problems”.
Verstappen confirmed to the BBC that he had spoken to various media after an earlier altercation with Horner.
Red Bull’s spokesperson tells the British channel that there is nothing wrong. “The team is a unit and we are focused on racing.” Red Bull managed to put the unrest in the background for a while with Max Verstappen’s convincing victory in the Bahrain Grand Prix. With Sergio Pérez’s second place, the team achieved the maximum score.
Parent company Red Bull had cleared team boss Horner of the allegations of inappropriate behavior on Wednesday after an independent investigation. However, the case continued to simmer after an email was sent containing screenshots of WhatsApp conversations Horner allegedly had with the woman who filed charges against him. It is unclear whether those conversations are real and who circulated them. Jos Verstappen denied being behind the email. Horner himself did not want to comment on it.
Formula 1 will continue next week with the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, which will be held on Saturday, March 9.
