A Vinci Autoroutes agent died this Sunday in a double accident on the A8 motorway in the Alpes-Maritimes while the department was swept by a storm.
Vinci Autoroutes broadcast a special message this Sunday evening on its social networks and on the Info Trafic frequency, 107.7.
“The whole company is struggling to produce the information it must transmit to you”, indicates the message reminding that “Vinci Autoroutes deplores the death of one of its agents during a terrible accident which also seriously injured a another patrol boat.
“He was 54 years old”
Of course, the first words of the highway concessionaire were “to the family, friends and colleagues of Tony Nellec, our patrolman killed in the exercise of his mission. He was 54 years old.”
And Vinci clarified the circumstances of this accident which left several other people injured, including two police officers. “It was raining hard this afternoon when two Vinci highway patrol officers brought an accident car to safety on the left lane of the A8 highway at KM208 just before La Turbie in the direction of Aix.”
“Crazy and uncontrolled car”
While they were joined by two gendarmes and two repairmen, “a crazy and uncontrolled car arrived at high speed and arrived in these markings hitting all five of them and killing Tony instantly”.
“We are speechless, without words… The great family of roads and highways has been hit hard. Our pain and our anger are immense.”
“Very excessive speed and dangerous driving”
“What more can we say, what more can we do than our prevention campaigns, our repeated advice to call for respect for the Highway Code. Like you, like us, these men and women in yellow, these gendarmes, these repairers start from home to carry out their mission and must, in the evening, return home.
If the investigation opened for “homicide and involuntary injuries” will have to shed light on the circumstances of the accident, Vinci Autoroutes says it is relying on a video which would attest to “very excessive speed and dangerous driving by the part of the driver of the crazy car.”
“Due to the fault of a driver and circumstances that the investigation will clarify, Tony Nellec lost his life this afternoon while he was carrying out his protection mission on the highway like every day,” lamented the dealer.
“Every journey, every kilometer”
“When driving, there is only one thing to do: always look far ahead and move aside when you see an intervention in progress. The flashing lights of the vehicles that intervene are always visible.” “It is vital to respect these instructions”, again reminds Vinci Autoroutes. “Every journey, every kilometer.”
In 2023, Vinci has deplored dozens of accidents involving its patrol boats. Thus, 52 Vinci Autoroutes vehicles were hit by third parties during the year. That’s the average of one per week.
