Othon Iliopoulos on emigrants’ complaints: “ND again violates the institution of personal data” – 2024-03-03 17:19:08

“Once again a member of the New Democracy is relentlessly violating laws and regulations of the Greek state such as that of the protection of personal data” emphasizes, regarding the complaints of Greeks abroad for violation of the GDPR by the ND MEP Anna Michele Asimakopoulou, the head of Apodimos Hellenism of SYRIZA-PS, Othon Iliopoulos.

“The citizen reasonably wonders, when the Ministry of the Interior itself cannot protect the personal data it collected from the voters and sells it as a product to “friends”, how is it possible to guard the integrity of the upcoming electoral contest” emphasizes the state parliamentarian of SYRIZA-PS adding that the procedures have already been initiated through the justice system for the performance of criminal acts and the protection of citizens’ rights.

The State Member of Parliament points out: “the experience of the Mitsotakis government’s wiretapping and collusion now extends to the interception of voters’ personal data”, and emphasizes that “SYRIZA – PS, in contrast to the ND which deals with diaspora Hellenism in terms customer relationship honors, listens and claims for the Greeks who live outside the Territory”.

“SYRIZA-PS was the first to formulate, support and will continue to support the request for real representation of the emigrants with the establishment of a separate electoral district abroad and the direct election of representatives”, concludes Othonas Iliopoulos.

The statement of Othon Iliopoulos in detail:

“The Mitsotakis Government’s experience of wiretapping and collusion now extends to the interception of voters’ personal data.

Thousands of Greek citizens living abroad saw today in their personal e-mail box a message from ND MEP Anna Michelle Asimakopoulou advertising her candidacy in view of the upcoming European elections. Once again, a member of the New Democracy is recklessly violating laws and provisions of the Greek state, such as that of the protection of personal data. The MEP’s message arrived a few minutes BEFORE or AFTER an informative e-mail from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to numerous complaints, Ms. Asimakopoulou’s office never asked the recipients of the said message for consent to use their email. However, apart from this obvious illegality, the indication that the source of the leak is the Ministry of the Interior itself, with the heavy responsibility of its political leadership, makes a painful impression.

The citizen reasonably wonders, when the Ministry of the Interior itself cannot safeguard the personal data it collected from the voters and markets it as a product to “friends”, how it is possible to guard the inviolability of the upcoming electoral contest. On our initiative, the process through the justice system for the performance of criminal acts and the protection of the rights of citizens inside and outside the Territory is already underway.

SYRIZA-PS, in contrast to the ND which deals with expatriate Hellenism in terms of a customer relationship, respects, listens and claims for the Greeks who live outside the Territory. For this reason, SYRIZA was the first to formulate, support and will continue to support the request for real representation of the emigrants with the establishment of a separate electoral district abroad and the direct election of representatives”.
