Beef exports to China in the month of January were reduced by about 50 thousand tons per month and were the lowest since April 2023, when Brazil’s shipments were altered by the four-week suspension due to the case. of atypical mad cow at the end of February last year.
The Mercosur countries are the origin of around three quarters of the beef imported by China and has a transit time of around 60 days. Therefore, the volume of meat that will be arriving at its destination in the month of March will be lower than in previous months and also lower than the monthly import needs of the main demander in the international market.
Based on the volumes exported by Mercosur and Oceania, it is estimated that some 205 thousand tons of beef were shipped to China in January. Monthly import needs are estimated at about 235 thousand tons.
Therefore, what will be arriving in the month that has just begun will not cover the needs and we will have to resort to stocks that, for the moment, remain high (they are estimated at around 1 million tons), but which this month should fall.
In the first month of 2024, 148 thousand tons sailed from Mercosur to China, 36,700 less than in December. Most of that volume will be arriving at its destination in March.
From Oceania, for its part, 27,646 tons were exported, nearly 10 thousand tons less than the previous month.
Between the Mercosur and Oceania countries, they account for 86% of the beef imported by China.
Among the other main suppliers, the United States and Bolivia stand out. The latter country more than doubled its shipments to China last year.
