Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
The explosion of votes for the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) up to 3.13 percent in the General Election Commission’s real count (KPU) sparked questions from many parties.
Based on KPU Sirekap data as of Sunday (3/3) at 11.00 WIB, PSI votes reached 2,403,086, aka 3.13 percent. Of the 65.80 percent of votes that went to the KPU, PSI was getting closer parliamentary threshold four percent as a condition for obtaining a seat in the DPR RI.
The vote share of the party led by President Joko Widodo’s youngest son, Kaesang Pangarep, rose quite drastically in the vote recapitulation for the 2024 election.
PSI initially received 2,291,882 votes or 3 percent on Friday (1/3) at 06.00 WIB, based on 65.34 percent of the data submitted to the KPU. PSI’s votes then rose to 2,395,363 or 3.12 percent the day after at 11.00 WIB, aka 103,481 votes in just 30 hours.
“Let’s just wait for the results of the KPU’s final calculations. Don’t lead opinions that mislead the public… What is not normal is if there are parties who try to lead opinions by questioning this,” said Deputy Chair of the PSI Board of Trustees Grace Natalie in a written statement, Saturday (2/3).
“Moreover, up to now, more than 70 million votes have not been counted and most of them are in Jokowi’s support bases where PSI has the potential for strong support,” he added.
PPP protested
On the other hand, PSI’s outburst of votes received protests from the United Development Party (PPP), which was worried about the opportunity to go to Senayan. Moreover, they passed the four percent threshold, before dropping to 3.98 percent or 3,036,144 votes.
Chairman of the PPP DPP Advisory Council Muchammad Romahurmuziy protested the irregularities. He suspects that there is a ‘child-loving’ operation behind the phenomenon of the spike in PSI votes.
The man who is familiarly called Romy compared the surge in PSI votes with the decline in numbers experienced by PPP. He emphasized that the increase in PSI votes was unnatural.
“Please pay attention to @kpu_ri and @bawasluri, what operation is this? To borrow Mr @jusufkalla’s language, another ‘child-loving’ operation?” said Romy on the @romahurmuziy account on Saturday (2/3). CNNIndonesia.com has received permission from Romy to quote.
Referring to surveyors, Romy claimed that such a surge could only occur if PSI obtained 50 percent of the votes at a number of polling stations (TPS).
Romy urged the KPU and the Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) to investigate this irregularity. He even threatened to drag this matter into using the right of inquiry.
“If this is not corrected, @dpp.ppp will ask for this part of the matter to be revealed as clearly as possible in this week’s inquiry right! I ask for @kpu_ri and @bawasluri’s attention openly and follow-up quickly and thoroughly!” he demanded.
Now, the PPP’s vote has risen again beyond the parliamentary threshold. The party bearing the Kaaba symbol received 3,080,432 votes or 4.01 percent.
KPU response
KPU Commissioner Idham Holik spoke about the noise behind the surge in PSI votes. He emphasized that Sirekap was not used as a determinant of election results.
“We don’t yet understand what is meant by this spike. What is clear is that the Election Law confirms that the vote tallies of election participants ratified by the KPU are based on official recapitulation,” he said at the Indonesian KPU Office, Jakarta, on the same day when the PPP submitted protest.
Idham emphasized that recapitulation is currently still taking place at the district/city level. Once completed, the votes will be recapitulated at the provincial level.
The peak will be a national level recapitulation held at the Indonesian KPU Office. It is based on the national recapitulation that the election results are determined.
“God willing, on March 20 2024, the recapitulation process will be completed according to schedule. Hopefully it will run smoothly,” concluded Idham.
PSI sound anomaly
Professor of Political Science at the State Islamic University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta Burhanuddin Muhtadi called the increase in PSI votes an ‘explosion’. According to him, this phenomenon is different from the rise and fall in votes for other parties in the 2024 elections that have been seen smooth.
“The PKB’s voice went up and down smooth since the beginning. Likewise with other parties. Meanwhile, PSI’s vote share has ‘exploded’ in just the last few days. “Usually, if the data entered into Sirekap is large and proportional, the votes of the parties will not be as dynamic as this,” wrote Burhanuddin in a conversation on X’s social media.
Burhanuddin admitted that he would check the anomaly. He will compare it with the C1 form at the sample TPS quick count survey institute.
Even so, he advised that it would be better to wait for the KPU’s manual calculations which are carried out in stages from the regions to the center so that they are fairer.
