Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI – the company behind the famous ChatGPT algorithm – and its CEO Sam Allman, alleging that the company abandoned its founding mission to develop artificial intelligence “for the benefit of humanity at large ».
Specifically, in a lawsuit filed on Thursday, February 29 in a San Francisco court, Musk’s lawyers argue that when Altman and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman approached the tech mogul in 2015, they had agreed to create a non-profit lab which would develop artificial intelligence for the “benefit of humanity”.
Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and stepped down from its board about four years later in 2018, has said that artificial intelligence is “potentially more dangerous than nuclear weapons.”
“To this day OpenAI’s website continues to state that its statutory purpose is to ensure that artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. In reality, however, OpenAI has become a closed-source de facto subsidiary of the world’s largest technology company, Microsoft,” the billionaire’s lawsuit says. Microsoft is now the largest investor in the company, following a deal struck in 2020.
It is noted that Musk and others in the technology sector are concerned that artificial general intelligence (AGI) could escape human control and endanger the planet.
