Richard Wagner’s opera “Siegfried” is a tale about a boy who defeats a dragon and learns the power of love, but also fear through it. It is the third opera in Wagner’s “The Ring of the Nibelung” tetralogy.

The conductor of the opera is Tarmo Peltokoski (Finland), whose dramaturgical solution as well as his ability to masterfully conduct the five-hour long opera without losing the tension and emotional intensity of the music have been highly appreciated by music critics.

The ensemble of soloists selected by Ilze Sprancmanes is special, which includes world-renowned opera singers from Latvia and Europe: Anna Larsone (Sweden), Olivers Cvargs (Germany), Mihaels Veinius (Sweden), Vida Miknevičūte (Lithuania), Timo Riihonen (Finland), Armands Siliņš-Bergmanis and Kristīne Gailīte. The music is performed by the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra.

Hector Berlioz’s “Requiem” is a tribute to the fallen of the July Revolution of 1830. It was created based on the first impressions Berlioz received when he arrived in Rome, the Vatican, and St. Peter’s Cathedral.

The opportunity to hear this requiem played is extremely rare, as the piece was deliberately written for very wide and large acoustics, and was originally written for four brass bands, one symphony orchestra, a choir and eight sets of timpani.

The idea of staging the work belongs to the conductor Māris Sirmaj, who has chosen a slightly narrower version of the original – leaving one instead of four brass bands and reducing the number of timpani sets by half. The Cathedral Church was chosen for the performance, because it is the only room in Latvia suitable for such a grand composition.

The music is performed by the State Academic Choir “Latvija”, the Brass Band “Rīga” and the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra. The soloist is the outstanding British tenor Andrew Staples. Conductor – Māris Sirmais.

The symphonic poem “Lāčplēsis” by Jānis Ivanovs written in 1957, the 9th symphony of Ādolfs Skulma written in 1987 and the piano concerto of Zigmars Liepins with a solo by pianist Andrejs Osokins were performed in the concert dedicated to the celebration of the 105th anniversary of the country.

Zigmars Liepiņš created this three-part piano concerto at the special request of his son, concert conductor Jānis Liepiņš. Liepiņš considers this concert to be his self-portrait. The composer chose Andrei Osokina as a pianist, valuing his skill in both lyrical pianism and musical irony.

Jānis Ivanov’s poem “Lāčplēsis” was created a year after the exile survivors began to return to Latvia, and can be perceived as a portrait of a hero, a sense of Latvian identity, the struggle between good and evil, the common power of the nation. Adolf Skulma’s 9th symphony was created with the aim of depicting the composer’s emotional experiences over the past seven years, focusing especially on the Chernobyl tragedy.

The music is performed by the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra. Conductor – Jānis Liepiņš.

The Grand Music Award ceremony will take place on March 12 at the Latvian National Opera. The event can be followed live from 19.00 on the portal LSM.lv and Latvijas Radio 3 “Klasika”, while from 21.10 the broadcast will be shown on LTV1.
