It is unbelievable what is hidden underground in the center of Varna.
Thousands of residents of Varna pass by a secret entrance to the underground levels next to the State Archives building every day.
Few know what lies beneath.
It is literally a portal to another world – that of the Roman Empire, writes Petel.bg.
A unique tomb-mausoleum from the Roman era sinks into oblivion in the center of Varna.
Here is what the people of Varna share on the social network:
I ask each of you, who by law and conscience sympathizes with the raised issue, to do what is necessary to activate the institutions and make this object accessible to the residents of Varna and the guests of our city.
The tomb was discovered in 1860 during the construction of the old inn. In the process of construction activities, the chamber of the tomb was filled with earth. In 1912, members of the Varna Archaeological Society under the leadership of the Shkorpil brothers “rediscovered” the tomb for the second time. They scoop the finger out of the chamber and enter it through an opening in the dome. It is not clear if it was pierced when the tomb was first discovered or if it was part of its construction.
Since the 1960s, the tomb has been closed to visitors. This was probably done for security reasons in connection with the main water pipe passing through her staircase, supplying the center of Varna with drinking water.
In 1982, during rescue archaeological excavations carried out in the town of “Rosnenica” near the village of Urvene, archaeologists from the museum in Vratsa studied a complex consisting of an out-of-town villa, farm premises and several tombs, all dated to the Roman era. During the archaeological research, a tomb was excavated, which is almost identical to the one in Varna. The tomb has an octagonal base. Beneath it are a crypt covered with a hemispherical vault and three rectangular burial niches, each covered with a semi-cylindrical vault.
The discoverer of the site identified it as a Roman tomb-mausoleum and dated it to the II-III century. After its exploration, it was re-buried for conservation purposes.
At the end of 2014, during excavation activities related to the repair of the central pedestrian area of Varna, the tomb-mausoleum was “rediscovered” for the third time. Inspections showed that the burial chamber and part of the staircase were flooded.
Today, almost 160 years after the discovery of this unique for Varna archaeological site, only public opinion can influence the local and state authorities to take all necessary measures to preserve and display this remnant of antiquity in its former glory.
