The guarantee is given by FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, who is against the implementation of the blue card suggested by the IFAB – International Football Association Board.
“Blue cards? That’s not even a topic. FIFA is completely opposed. Do you want a title? Red card to blue cards. No way, there’s no chance,” the FIFA president told the British television station Sky, as part of a meeting of the body in Scotland. “We are always open to proposals, but after some analysis we also have to protect the game, its essence and tradition. No blue card”, guaranteed the top leader in world football.
As happens in other sports, the blue card would allow the possibility of exclusion for a few minutes – the IFAB’s proposal would be to allow referees to expel players for ten minutes – for fouls considered unsportsmanlike or insults. There would now be three cards: Yellow, red and blue. Something that, it is now reinforced, will not move forward.
Remember that FIFA holds 4 of the 8 votes at IFAB meetings, with the remainder distributed among the British nations. The announced position immediately rejects the possibility of the measure moving forward, taking into account the weight in the decision of the body that oversees world football.
The blue card had already been heavily criticized by several personalities in the world of football, including Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool coach, who even stated that he did not remember a valid idea from IFAB over the last few years.
