US Congress extends the federal State budget – Diario La Página – 2024-03-02 10:58:58

Democratic and Republican congressmen from the United States agreed on Wednesday (02/28/2024) to extend the federal State budget for a few days and avoid the feared paralysis for the moment.

The United States has been trying for months to pass a finance law for 2024, but Congress is unable to agree and limits itself to adopting a series of mini-laws to extend the budget of the “federal State for a few days or a few months.”

When these mini-budgets are about to expire, there is a risk that the federal administration will partially shut down, what Americans call a “shutdown.”

This Friday one of them expired. The list of possible consequences is long: air traffic controllers stop receiving salaries, administrations close, food aid is frozen, among others.

Wednesday’s agreement extends part of the current budget by one week, until March 8, and another part until March 22, senior congressional officials announced in a statement.

It still needs to be approved by the House and Senate and signed into law by President Joe Biden.
