Massive Snowstorm Hits Sierra Nevada, California Ski Resorts Close
A massive snowstorm is set to hit the Sierra Nevada region in California, causing several ski resorts to close their doors in preparation. The state and neighboring Nevada are bracing themselves for up to 10 feet of snow, accompanied by wind gusts of up to 140 mph. Already, two feet of snow has fallen in the area, and the most extreme weather is expected at the highest elevations in the mountain region.
The storm arrived in the region on Thursday and is predicted to strengthen after midnight on Friday. The forecast warns that snowfall could reach a rate of three to five inches an hour on Friday and Saturday. The Weather Prediction Center has issued a warning, stating that the storm will bring a high chance of substantial, long-lasting disruptions to daily life in the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada.
As a result, officials have closed off large stretches of I-80, a highway in the Sierra Nevada, and Yosemite National Park has shut down for the weekend. Over a dozen ski resorts surrounding Lake Tahoe have also halted operations. While there have been no reports of serious injuries so far, Californian officials have responded to incidents of car collisions and vehicles sliding off the road or getting stuck along I-80.
The storm is not limited to California alone. Parts of Utah and Arizona are also expected to experience strong and dangerous wind gusts. This snowstorm comes after a slow start to the snow season in the region, raising concerns about California’s water supply. Typically, the snowpack in the mountains provides a substantial portion of the state’s water supply.
Conditions are expected to improve by Monday, although the area may see even more snow in the middle of next week. It is crucial for residents and travelers to take necessary precautions during this severe weather event. Stay updated with weather warnings and road closures to ensure safety.
As we await the aftermath of this massive snowstorm, it serves as a reminder of the power and unpredictability of nature. The Sierra Nevada region, known for its stunning landscapes and popular ski resorts, now stands blanketed in snow, temporarily halting the activities that attract visitors from far and wide. But with the promise of improved conditions and the potential for more snow in the coming week, this winter wonderland is sure to be bustling once again.
