Shipment of 32 M101A1 howitzers to Ukraine via…Czech Republic – 2024-03-02 00:44:17

The Mitsotakis government continues to send weapons to Ukraine, but this time it probably intends to inform the Greek Parliament.

This time it is about the transfer of 32 towed M101A1 howitzers of 105 mm caliber. from the reserves of the Greek Army.

The Greek Parliament’s special permanent committee on equipment programs and contracts will be asked to give an opinion on the matter on Thursday, according to a report by in.gr, which states that the transfer to Ukraine will be implemented through the Czech Republic. And more specifically through an intergovernmental agreement.

The 32 howitzers will be sold to the Czech Republic for 1,950,000 euros, and then the Czech Republic will be the one to promote them to Ukraine.

How this will be done raises questions as Greece has already sent military aid directly to Ukraine, such as the Russian-made and East German-sourced BMP-1 armored fighting vehicles (AMVs).

Even the Ukrainians have thanked Greece for ammunition, pilot training and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles for which the Mitsotakis government has declared… radio silence.

So the committee of the Parliament that will examine this mission should ask for a full list of the weapons that the Greek people have paid for and have silently left for Ukraine, as well as a full list of what has still been requested from Greece as information circulates for many anti-aircraft systems, which if confirmed, will mean the complete weakening of the Greek air defense.

The 105 mm M101A1 towed howitzer. it is of American manufacture and origin and entered service with the Greek Artillery in 1951. In 1970 the number of M101A1s in Greek service amounted to 465 units, making up about 60% of the towed guns in service.

In 1980, with the decision to select the caliber 155 mm. as more suitable for Direct Support, the gradual withdrawal of the M101A1 began and their replacement by 155 mm howitzers.

Today, according to open sources, around 180 guns of this type are kept in storage. With a length of 6.10 meters and a weight of 2.26 tons, the M101A1 is manned by seven people and has a maximum range of 11,275 meters.

Although it is old, this particular cannon is not obsolete and proof of that is that Ukraine is asking for it.

A question that should also concern the Parliament is whether the guns will be accompanied by the corresponding shells, like the ones that Ukraine thanked us for.
