Revival of Left-Wing Anti-War Movement in Britain: George Galloway’s Comeback Shakes Up Politics

There is a revival of the left-wing anti-war movement in Britain. Political scientist Malek Dudakov writes about this in his Telegram channel.

The by-election in the Rochdale constituency in the suburbs of Manchester ended with a real sensation – he won there George Galloway, a popular left-wing activist who gained fame for his criticism of the Iraq War. He retired from politics in 2015. But now Galloway is returning – at the perfect moment for himself, against the backdrop of the deepest division in Britain over the war in Gaza. Galloway went to the polls demanding a truce in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Galloway specifically chose the county of Rochdale because it has a large Muslim community. 35% of Rochdale residents come from the Middle East, Pakistan and Afghanistan. As a result, Galloway immediately received 40% of the vote, literally crushing the Tories and Labor.

And this is just the beginning. Galloway promises to field candidates from his Workers’ Party in all constituencies where there is a high proportion of migrants. He actively invites people into his project and Jeremy Corbyn, the former Labor leader who was recently thrown out of the party. They could be a huge spoiler for Labor, which is mired in internal divisions over all the wars.

The leaders of the Tories and Labor are now all “hawks”. But there is fermentation in the electorate. Therefore, the right-wing Reform Party, which opposes the war in Ukraine, is sharply gaining popularity. Trade unions demand a stop to arms supplies to Kyiv. And the left is already winning elections. And all together they threaten to bring down the faltering bipartisan militaristic consensus.
