President Jokowi Announces PT Freeport Smelter in Gresik to Operate in June 2024, Will Absorb Up to 20 Thousand Workers

Jakarta

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said PT Freeport’s smelter in Gresik will operate in June 2024. The industry will absorb up to 20 thousand young people as workers.

Initially, Jokowi talked about the purchase of a majority stake in PT Freeport by BUMN in 2018. This action was taken to enable PT Freeport, which is a gold mining company from overseas, to carry out downstream operations in Indonesia.

“It’s not easy to get them to build the smelter industry. Because they are used to sending raw materials to Japan, some are sent to Spain, the smelter industry is there. This means that firstly we lose added value and secondly we lose what is called a job opportunity for children nation,” said Jokowi in his remarks at the XX IMM Congress in Palembang, South Sumatra, Friday (1/3/2024).

For this reason, Jokowi asked BUMN to buy the majority stake in PT Freeport. With this step, Freeport can create a smelter industry in Indonesia.

“We carried out what is called the purchase of a majority stake in PT Freeport by our BUMN. So we now have a majority stake of 51%. After we have the majority, I will then order the BUMN to immediately build the smelter industry,” he said.

Jokowi said that the Freeport smelter will operate this year and recruit a lot of workers, especially young people.

“And God willing, later in June this year, PT Freeport’s smelter industry, which will process copper and perhaps tons of gold, will start operating and will recruit our young people, maybe more than 15 thousand or 20 thousand to work there and the added value also jumps,” he said.
