JBS USA has stated that it would achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, even though it has documented plans to increase production and, therefore, its carbon footprint.
New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against JBS USA Food Company and JBS USA Food Company Holdings, the US subsidiary of the world’s largest producer of beef products, for allegedly misleading the public about its environmental impact. according to a statement shared on their website.
The text indicates that JBS USA has stated that it would achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, despite having documented plans to increase production and, consequently, its carbon footprint.
In this sense, it points out that, in 2021, the JBS Group – global parent company of JBS USA – declared total greenhouse gas emissions of more than 71 million tons, which exceeds the total emissions of some countries.
Likewise, it indicates that the company carried out a “greenwashing” of environmental damage and addressed consumers with false sustainability claims to increase sales, so the lawsuit seeks to have JBS USA end such false and deceptive marketing practices, as well as pay a penalty.
“When companies falsely advertise their commitment to sustainability, they are misleading consumers and endangering our planet. “JBS USA’s greenwashing takes advantage of the pockets of everyday Americans and the promise of a healthy planet for future generations,” James said, adding that his office will ensure that companies do not abuse the environment and consumer trust to profit.
