A woman was murdered by her ex-husband in the El Caney neighborhood, located in the capital municipality of the province of Santiago de Cuba. According to independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, the victim was identified as Yanelis Coca, who was the grandmother of a little boy and mother of two twins.
The communicator indicated on Facebook that the woman’s murder was violent, and originated from alleged separation problems and jealousy on the part of her ex-partner. The aggressor, who took his own life after committing the crime, was identified as Adonis, and worked in Community Services.
The complaint states that the incident occurred over the weekend, inside the victim’s home. The attacker attacked her with an ax, cutting her neck shortly after killing the woman.
The communicator revealed that the worst thing about the incident is that the unfortunate event was witnessed by the grandson of the deceased.
The victim was laid to rest at the local funeral home, and buried in the El Caney cemetery after his daughters, who reside in Havana, traveled to Santiago de Cuba.
Neighbors of the deceased indicated that they managed to hear the woman’s cries for help and tried to intervene, but that everything happened too quickly, so they did not have time to prevent the murder. Upon arrival, several people found both people on the floor, surrounded by a lot of blood.
A source close to the deceased told the journalist that Coca had been separated from the attacker for years, but he used to frequently visit her at home to spend time with her grandson. Likewise, he said that the woman had begun a relationship with another man, something that could have contributed to the attacker’s motives.
“That same day I saw them, she was with her boyfriend, he left her on the corner and went home. In the afternoon she tells me that they killed her partner, the guy who was there at home had harassed her and killed her,” declared this neighbor.
This fact of gender violence is added to those registered by independent feminist platforms, which have counted at least eight more so far this year, this after Cuba closed 2023 with at least 86 cases.
These platforms have emphasized that the true number of femicides may be much higher, but the lack of transparency of the authorities and the silence of the official media make it difficult to keep an exact count.
