Syria: Explosions in Damascus – Israeli missiles shot down, Syrian TV broadcasts – 2024-03-01 10:46:32

Israel launched strikes near Damascus this evening, according to Syrian and Lebanese media.

“Our air defenses responded to an Israeli attack on the outskirts of Damascus and shot down most of the missiles,” Syrian state television reported, without elaborating.

According to the pro-Iranian, Lebanese channel Al Mayadeen, a powerful explosion was heard in the Sayeda Zainab district of the Syrian capital. In this area, in the southern suburbs, Iranian-backed forces maintain underground bases.

An AFP correspondent said he heard loud explosions followed by ambulance sirens.

Since the start of the civil war in Syria in 2011, the Israeli military has launched hundreds of airstrikes in its neighboring country. He rarely comments on these operations, but stresses that he will not allow Iran, his sworn enemy, to gain a foothold on his borders. The blows attributed to Israel multiplied after war broke out in the Gaza Strip in October. The main target is forces backed by Iran, an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
