Public Transport Strike Week: Demonstrations and Closures Across Northern Germany

As of: March 1, 2024 10:04 a.m

At the climax of the nationwide strike week in local public transport, many buses and trains in the north will once again be at a standstill today – now also in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Ver.di and the environmental movement “Fridays for Future” are also jointly calling for a climate strike day.

Under the motto “For good work and climate-friendly mobility,” “Fridays for Future” has planned numerous demonstrations – in the north, for example, in Hamburg, Kiel, Flensburg, Lübeck, Rostock, Greifswald, Hanover, Hildesheim, Göttingen, Lüneburg, Braunschweig and Bremen. Closures and diversions will be signposted accordingly.

“Fridays for Future” and ver.di together on the street

In Hamburg, the police expect more than 3,000 participants. After a kick-off rally at 10 a.m. in front of the union hall at Besenbinderhof, the demo procession will lead through the city center to the town hall. The campaign alliance made up of “Fridays for Future” and the ver.di union is calling for a change of course in public transport, with better working conditions, more staff and investments in local transport of 16 billion euros annually by 2030.

Hamburg: Buses and subways will be at a standstill until tomorrow morning

The employees of the Hamburger Hochbahn and the Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein GmbH (VHH) have been on strike since Thursday morning for 48 hours – until Saturday morning. According to information from the Hochbahn, there is no emergency operation and there are neither buses nor subways in Hamburg and the surrounding area. The night buses from one day to the next are also affected, according to the ver.di union. She called for the warning strike in order to gain a better negotiating position in the discussions about collective agreements at Hochbahn and VHH.

The S-Bahn in Hamburg and Eisenbahn GmbH AKN are not affected by the warning strike. According to Hochbahn, the HADAG harbor ferries and school bus routes also run as scheduled. The ADAC does not expect any traffic chaos due to the strike today. Many employees would now work from home on strike days.

Local transport in Lower Saxony and Bremen is at a standstill

After the warning strike in Lower Saxony started on Wednesday in Göttingen, work stoppages have been announced for today in Hanover, Braunschweig, Osnabrück, Wolfsburg and Goslar as well as Bremen. Operations will largely be suspended in the affected companies. The Bremer Straßenbahn AG, as well as Üstra in Hanover and the Braunschweiger Verkehrsgesellschaft, leave all trams and buses in the depots. Metrobus Osnabrück, Göttinger Verkehrsbetriebe and Stadtbus Goslar are suspending bus operations, and in Wolfsburg more than 80 percent of all bus connections are said to be canceled.

SH: Now municipal bus companies are also affected

The public transport warning strike week began in the north last Monday by employees of private bus companies in Schleswig-Holstein organized in the ver.di union. The work stoppages there are expected to continue up to and including today.

In addition, the municipal bus companies in Kiel, Neumünster, Lübeck and Flensburg are now also on strike – up to and including Sunday. Because the next negotiation date with the employers is not scheduled to take place for four weeks, ver.di has already announced that it will call for a warning strike from 3:30 p.m. on Friday to Sunday evening until the Easter holidays.

Starting today, bus drivers in the municipal bus industry are also on strike. The private bus company strike ends this evening. more

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Warning strike until midnight

There will also be a strike all day today in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Employees of local public transport and the Vorpommern-Rügen transport company are called upon to take part. This means that local transport companies in almost all parts of the country are affected, the union said. Because school buses are also affected, the state parents’ council and several regional parents’ councils accuse those involved of being irresponsible. “With this strike day, there will already be six days of school missing in 2024, after just two months,” criticized the parents’ councils. In their view, the strike would have been better held during the winter holidays. However, there are not strikes everywhere – for example not at the Neubrandenburg transport company.

Shortage of staff at all transport companies

There have already been a number of strike actions nationwide in the past few weeks. Ver.di demands, among other things, shorter working hours without financial losses, longer rest periods between individual shifts, more vacation days or more vacation pay. This is intended to relieve the burden on employees and make jobs in local transport more attractive. All transport companies suffer from a lack of staff.

The union is currently negotiating in parallel in all federal states. In most rounds, the main focus is on the working conditions for employees. A new collective agreement for the transport companies is being negotiated in Hamburg. Only in Bavaria is it not possible to strike: there the collective agreement has not been terminated.
