Irene Svenonius leaves politics

In a press release the government announces that Irene Svenonius will become director general of the Norwegian Property Agency.

She has previously been financial regional councilor in Region Stockholm for a number of years. In the 2022 election, the bourgeois alliance lost power and she became a regional councilor instead.

Over the years, Irene Svenonius has received a lot of criticism, including during the midwifery crisis.

She is now leaving all political assignments, both assignments for the Moderates in Region Stockholm and other assignments for the Moderates. She gave that message at a special meeting with the moderate regional group in Stockholm, according to one press release from the Moderates.

In the press release she says:

»I have led the moderate regional group for seven years, through ups and downs. Since the election loss in 2022, we have shaped our opposition role and started extensive development work of the Moderates’ policy in order to earn increased trust among Stockholmers in 2026. Now, in the middle of the mandate period, it feels completely right to hand over the responsibility to someone else.«.

Irene Svenonius will take up her post as chief director of the Norwegian Property Agency on March 4.

At the same time, the government has appointed the former social democratic finance market minister Max Elger as director general of the authority. He will now be Irene Svenonius’ boss.
