Ford Patents Dual Voltage Charging Station to Revolutionize EV Market

The rapid development of the electric vehicle market is still giving rise to many standards and solutions that are trying to get along with each other and, if they provide advantages to some consumers, they result in certain inconveniences for others. As explained Electrek with reference to data from the official database of the American patent office USPTO, Ford Motor Company has patented a charging station capable of operating at both a voltage of 400 V and a higher voltage of 800 V.

Current-generation Ford electric vehicles use a 400-volt on-board network; charging the Mustang Mach-E crossover when connected to a 107 kW charging station from 10 to 80% requires 38 to 45 minutes. Hyundai electric vehicles, which have already switched to 800 V, restore their charge from 10 to 80% in 18 minutes when using a 350 kW charging station. The introduction of the new standard will allow Ford to speed up charging of electric vehicles.
