Pancras Hogendoorn is permanently stepping down as dean and vice-chairman of the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). Hogendoorn temporarily resigned from his duties in November after reports of fraud involving European subsidies.
From a publication by Follow the Money and Broadcasting West it turned out that the dean was aware of the fraud at the end of 2021. For example, Hogendoorn had a conversation with a PhD student who was fired because she did not want to cooperate in the fraud. The woman was asked to pretend that she lived abroad so that the subsidy would be higher, the regional broadcaster reports. Hoogendoorn did nothing with this information.
A year later, the hospital received notice that the European subsidy provider REA had discovered ‘structural fraud’ and it was removed from several major investigations. The top of the LUMC said when to be surprised and shocked: “These are not consistent with the reliability and integrity that one can expect from us,” said Frida van Maagdenberg of the board of directors at the time.
But it later turned out that the board of directors, at least vice-chairman Pancras Hogendoorn, was previously aware of the fraud through the conversation with the dismissed PhD student, say Follow the Money and Omroep West.
Deep tracks
Hogendoorn says that he would have acted differently if he knew what he knew now. By quitting permanently, he wants to “contribute to further calming of the organization”.
The hospital says that the fraud has left deep scars in LUMC and that Hogendoorn’s resignation “was not easy for anyone involved”. The hospital also thanks him for his work.
Following the reports, the hospital’s supervisory board started an investigation into the actions of the board of directors. The outcome of this is expected soon. The subsidy was requested for the hospital by research agency Percuros.
