Dune: Part Two Storms International Box Office as Warner Bros’ Highly Anticipated Sequel Takes the Lead
Warner Bros/Legendary Entertainment’s highly anticipated sequel, Dune: Part Two, has made a thunderous debut at the international box office. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the film began its overseas rollout on Wednesday in 13 markets, emerging as the number one Hollywood film in each of them. With a total of $5.2 million for the day, including previews, the film has already accumulated an offshore cume of $7.6 million.
Impressively, Dune: Part Two has garnered exceptional success in its release markets. In France, where the film has been met with great enthusiasm, it has accumulated a running cume of $2.3 million, including previews. Audiences have awarded it an outstanding rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars on Allociné, while critics have given it a solid 4.1 rating. The film’s performance is on par with other highly successful films such as The Batman, surpassing Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One by 27%, Villeneuve’s previous Dune adaptation by 44%, and Oppenheimer by an impressive 63%. Additionally, the film’s Imax results have exceeded expectations, with admissions being 65% higher than Oppenheimer. When considering the Tuesday previews in France, Dune: Part Two’s Imax performance even surpasses that of Avatar: The Way of Water.
In Korea, where the local film Exhuma has been dominating the box office, Dune: Part Two opened at number two with $1.2 million on Wednesday. This opening day figure is 108% higher than the first Dune film and a staggering 385% ahead of Blade Runner 2049. Furthermore, it marks the biggest opening day for both lead actor Timothée Chalamet and director Denis Villeneuve. Notably, Dune: Part Two has also achieved the highest Imax opening day for a Warner Bros. title. As of Thursday, the film has grossed $2.1 million in Korea.
In Taiwan, Dune: Part Two has claimed a remarkable 62% market share on its opening day, accumulating $892,000. This figure surpasses Oppenheimer by 107%, The Batman by 172%, and the first Dune film by an impressive 229%. The film’s performance in Taiwan marks the biggest opening day for both Villeneuve and Chalamet.
Italy, which has been experiencing a positive resurgence in its cinema industry, has warmly embraced Dune: Part Two. On Wednesday, the film secured a 58% share of the top five films, surpassing the first Dune film by 4% and Mission: Impossible 7 by 32%. Advance ticket sales for the coming days are promising, and both critics and fans have responded positively to the film.
In Sweden, Dune: Part Two had an early start with an impressive $546,000, dominating the box office with a 74% share of the top five films. Imax screenings accounted for 12% of the box office revenue. The film has also outperformed all comparable films in the Swedish market.
The success of Dune: Part Two shows no signs of slowing down, as it is set to release in another 42 markets on Thursday, including Germany, Australia, and all of Latin America. On Friday, it will open in 16 additional markets, including Spain and the UK, bringing the total number of release markets to 71 after the weekend.
