(Berlin = Yonhap News) Correspondent Gye-yeon Kim = As farmer protests against the influx of low-priced agricultural products from Ukraine continue, the Polish government has decided to consider banning the import of agricultural products from Russia instead of Ukraine.

According to Reuters and Bloomberg, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced this at a press conference with Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silinja, who visited Warsaw on the 29th (local time).

Prime Minister Tusk said, “We carefully analyzed the case of Latvia, which decided to ban imports of Russian (agricultural products), and do not rule out the possibility that Poland will take similar measures.”

He also added that the problem of oversupply and unfair competition arises not only from Ukraine but also from the inflow of agricultural products from Russia and Belarus, and that he will meet with farmers’ groups this afternoon to discuss the issue.

The Latvian parliament passed a bill on the 22nd banning the import of agricultural and livestock products produced in Russia and Belarus. This is to prevent Russia from using the money earned from exports as war funds.

Prime Minister Silinja said, “If Poland imposes an import ban, we will support and cooperate with it.”

Until the day before, Prime Minister Tusk said, “We are discussing temporary border closure and trade suspension.”
