Microsoft to Introduce Non-Restart Updates for Windows 11 by 2024: Hotpatching Technology Explained

When I write about revolution, I mean in the Windows world. Installing service updates for the operating system normally requires a restart of the computer. macOS and Linux can install selected updates without restarting, and in some cases, the kernel itself can be patched on the fly. Microsoft won’t get around to it until 2024. He brought the information Zac Bowden.

According to him, Microsoft is currently testing the method hotpatching, which Microsoft already uses in some editions of Windows Server and on Xbox. Windows 11 Insider Preview build 26058, which was recently released to the Canary and Dev channels, should already contain it.

Originally, this information was not listed in the changelog, but on February 22 Microsoft post on the Windows Insider blog has revived to release update KB5036080 to build and only in the Dev channel. It says that the installation si may not require a restart if the computer has security virtualization technology enabled VBS (Virtualization Based Security). This does not apply to machines with ARM processors.

Hotpatching requires VBS to be enabled

By default, VBS should be turned on, and it is this that contributes to the increased hardware requirements of Jedenátek. An indicator is displayed in the updated system ge_release_svc_hotpatch_prod1.240211-0859. According to documentation hotpatching fixes the code of running processes in memory without having to restart the process.

You can work with your computer during the update process, the running of programs is not endangered. These updates are smaller in scope, so in addition they install faster and the whole process consumes less system resources. Patches are applied with a shorter delay using this method.

Microsoft it does not use this type of updates constantly. It releases a standard service update once every few months, followed by minor security updates for this particular revision. In the case of virtualized computers on the Azure platform, it is released every two months, i.e. every third month is followed by a regular service update, which already requires a restart of the computer.

We don’t yet know for sure what approach Microsoft will take for Windows 11. According to Bowden, four classic service updates should be released per year, but they can also be released outside of the schedule. Microsoft is said to hope to offer the technology letos ve Windows 11 24H2. However, it is not certain that they will not reserve it only for corporate editions. ARM processors should be supported next year at the earliest.

An update odyssey

Normally you have to restart your Windows computer once or twice a month, if we stick to the scenario that only Windows Update itself installs mandatory updates. Service updates are scheduled to be released every second Tuesday of the month. The term “patch Tuesday” was adopted.

On this day, multiple updates will be released and they will install each other in a single cycle, so you only need to do one reboot. There will be additional updates sometime throughout the month. Since Windows 7, the situation has improved considerably. When prompted to restart then, the computer automatically restarted within five minutes if you weren’t sitting on it.

Microsoft releases mandatory updates every second Tuesday of the month

If that was the case, you’re back to a restarted computer. Windows Update didn’t mind at all that you had a lot of work to do. The Eights took a big step forward by giving you three days to nonviolently warn you that the inevitable is coming. If you didn’t trigger the reboot yourself, they started showing urgent prompts after three days with a 15-minute countdown.

The Redmonds gradually eased the rules during the development of Windows 10. Today, Windows Update does not force you to restart immediately, unless you set it that way. You don’t have to restart for many days or weeks, you can plan the action. In addition, a protection function has been added so that automatic restart cannot occur during working hours.
