Taviano died around 18:00 at a clinic in Rome, surrounded by his family. A public funeral is scheduled for the morning of Monday, March 4, at the Promototeca del Campidoglio in Rome. Brother Vittorio died in 2018 at the age of 88.
The Tavians started by filming short documentaries. The film Padre padrone (1977), based on the autobiographical book of the Italian linguist Gavin Ledda, who grew up as an illiterate shepherd until the age of eighteen, brought fame to the brother duo. This film won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Their war drama The Night of Saint Lawrence (1982) won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes. In 1986, Taviani received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Festival, but he continued to work until recently. The last drama titled Goodbye, Leonoro was made by Paolo Taviani in 2022.
